FINAL THOUGHTS From its bold exterior styling and luxurious interior to its advanced infotainment f The BMW N42 engine brought modern Valvetronic tech to the E46, improving efficiency but introducing new reliability challenges. When the E46 3 Series first arrived, its four-cylinder petrol engines relied on the aging M43—a simple, eight-valve design that left the 316i and 318i feeling underpowered compared to the six-cylinder models. That changed in 2001 with the introduction of the BMW N42, a modern 16-valve engine available in 1.8- and 2.0-liter forms. Power rose by more than 20 horsepower over the M43, torque increased meaningfully, and the transformation for everyday E46 models was immediately noticeable. For the first time in years, a four-cylinder 3 Series felt genuinely lively. The N42 stayed in production until 2004 and was used exclusively in the E46, powering the 316i, 318i, 318Ci, and 318ti Compact. It also introduced one of BMW’s most important modern technologies—Valvetronic—which continues to shape BMW engines to this day. But as with many transitional designs, innovation came with compromises.

BMW X3 Production In South Africa Is Running At Full Capacity. About half of the vehicles built at Plant Rosslyn are the X3 30e xDrive plug-in hybrid. BMW’s Rosslyn factory in South Africa builds no fewer than 330 X3s every single day. Production of the “G45” started a little over a year ago when the first 30e xDrive rolled off the assembly line. It’s worth noting that the plug-in hybrid is made exclusively in SA for all global markets. A few months later, the electrified crossover was joined by the gas-powered X3 20 and diesel X3 20d. Much like the PHEV, the six-cylinder X3 40d is also built solely in South Africa. Of the four variants, the electrified model is by far the most popular, currently accounting for half of Plant Rosslyn’s output, according to Peter van Binsbergen, CEO of BMW Group South Africa. In an interview with Cars.co.za, the local chief said production is “maxed out.” BMW is pleased with its decision to shift production from the 3 Series to the X3. That change happened in 2018 when the “F30” 3 Series was discontinued to make room for the “G01” X3. Van Binsbergen calls it a “great strategy,” as the company accurately predicted the crossover boom at the expense of sedans. The previous-generation X3 proved the point, remaining sold out right up until the “G01” was discontinued in 2024. “G45” production isn’t confined to South Africa, as BMW also builds the upscale crossover in Spartanburg, South Carolina. That’s where the hot M Performance version (X3 M50) is made exclusively. This time around, there’s no successor to the diesel M Lite model, as the X3 M40d won’t return. A full-fat combustion-powered X3 M is also off the table. BMW assembles the X3 in other global plants as well, including in China, where it produces the long-wheelbase “G48.” Despite its familiar name, the new iX3 is unrelated to the combustion-engine model and is built solely in Debrecen, Hungary. Starting in 2027, the Neue Klasse-based electric SUV will also be produced at the San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico.

BMW X3 Rugged Edition Toughens Up The Luxury SUV. The more adventurous version gets all-terrain tires and an adaptive suspension, among other upgrades. BMW South Africa keeps finding ways to draw more people into showrooms and buy an X3. The locally assembled luxury crossover recently gained a rear-wheel-drive Pure Edition, and now we’re learning about another special variant. The Rugged Edition isn’t a limited-run model as the name might imply, but an optional package. It’s available exclusively for the X3 20d xDrive and should perform better off the beaten path thanks to its smaller wheels. It ditches the standard 19-inch alloys for an 18-inch set painted in Frozen Midnight and wrapped in meaty 225/60 R18 General Grabber tires. While adaptive suspension is usually an option on the “G45,” it comes standard on the Rugged Edition. BMW South Africa sweetens the deal with a slew of extra items. For example, the X3 Rugged Edition gets a black roof rack that holds a 320-liter roof box. BMW-branded, of course. All-weather floor mats and transparent protection film are also included. More importantly, the diesel crossover gains heated front and rear seats. An electronically deployed trailer tow hitch rated at up to 2,500 kilograms is part of the package as well.

Celebrating 50 Years of the BMW 3 Series with a Rare Tourmaline Violet E46 Convertible. Dirk Fraterman’s rare Tourmaline Violet BMW 318Ci Convertible highlights 50 years of the 3 Series with a personal, standout E46 story. The BMW 3 Series turns 50 this year, and across Europe the anniversary is being marked not just with classic icons, but with personal stories—individual cars that define what the 3 Series means to real owners. In the Netherlands, one of those standout cars belongs to Dirk Fraterman, who has spent the past decade driving and preserving a 2002 BMW 318Ci Convertible finished in one of the rarest factory colors of its era: Tourmaline Violet Pearl Effect. It’s a car that catches the eye immediately, but for Dirk, the story starts long before he spotted this E46 at a local dealership. His connection to BMW is something of a family tradition. A Family Story Rooted in BMW Heritage. Dirk grew up surrounded by BMWs. His grandparents were early adopters of the brand in the Netherlands, and his grandfather—a businessman—was a loyal customer who often played golf with his BMW dealer. “One thing led to another,” Dirk recalls. “First an E36 Touring for my grandmother, then several 5 Series and 7 Series models for my grandparents. By the time I was born, both my parents were already driving BMWs. You can guess how that turned out,” he adds with a grin. It’s no surprise, then, that decades later, he would add his own chapter to the family’s BMW story.
